Heading into the 2010-2011 season in the NFL, there will be quite a few teams around the league that have either made considerable upgrades in the offseason or have high hopes of for their chances of competing for a Super Bowl title.

Obviously, not every team in the league can contend for a Super Bowl title, but one of the most intriguing teams in the NFL that might really surprise people next season is the Tennessee Titans.

Last season the Tennessee Titans got off to an extremely rocky start as they lost the first seven games of the season and looked like they were headed for a very disappointing year after having arguably one of the most successful in recent memory in the previous season.

Fortunately, even though the Titans were basically out of playoff contention, head coach Jeff Fisher was able to turn the franchise around by shaking up his roster. The biggest move Fisher made in order to turn his struggling team around was benching veteran quarterback Kerry Collins in favor of troubled quarterback Vince Young.

Over the past couple of years, Vince Young had really struggled with his play on the field and his life off it. Many people believed his career was basically over as a starting quarterback in this league was no longer considered one of the promising players in the NFL, but rather a big disappointment and draft bust.

Even though many people had lost faith in Young and were skeptical of the move by Jeff Fisher to make him the starter once again, the former Texas Longhorn had one of his best seasons of his career as he seemed to get his confidence back behind center and was able to lead to the Titans back to prominent status in the AFC Conference.

One of the main reasons for Vince Young’s new found success behind center was the emergence or arguably the best running back in the league in Chris Johnson. Even though the consensus around the league has been that Adrian Peterson is the best running back in the NFL today, Johnson may have taken over that distinction as he was virtually unstoppable out of the backfield for the Tennessee Titans last season.

With the combination of Vince Young and Chris Johnson, the Tennessee Titans became arguably one of the hottest teams in the league in the second half of the season and actually threatened to win the AFC Wildcard after losing the first seven games of the season.

Unfortunately, the Titans were unable to win the Wildcard and missed the playoffs, but with the success in the second half of the year Jeff Fisher was able to save his job and gave Titans fans hope for the future moving forward.chris-johnson

Even though the Titans seem to have a promising future with a resurgent Vince Young and arguably the best running back in the league, they had one big problem heading into next season as they needed to address Chris Johnson’s contract which will only pay him $550,000 in the 2010-2011 NFL season.

Obviously, with Johnson’s breakout performance last season, the up and coming running back wanted a raise and no one could blame him after the kind of numbers he put up: 2,006 rushing yards, 503 receiving, 14 rushing touchdowns and one receiving touchdown.

The Tennessee Titans would like to pay Chris Johnson what he wants which is in the $30 million dollar range after next season, but in the meantime they would like agree on something short-term which would be about $2 million dollars in incentives plus his $550,000 salary.

That was a questionable move by the Titans, smart, but questionable. Despite the distinct possibility of Johnson holding out for a better deal, the Pro Bowl running back has agreed to those terms and will be ready for training camp.
