The Darrelle Revis holdout in New York continues

Last season the New York Jets were arguably one of the best teams in the NFL as they had a lockdown defense led by corner Darrelle Revis and an up and coming offense with rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez at the helm. Not only were the Jets able to quickly become a force to be reckoned with in the AFC Conference once again, but they also had an extremely passionate head coach dedicated to winning in the defensive minded Rex Ryan.

With all the pieces starting to come together for the Gang Green last season, the struggling NFL franchise finally had some hope for the future and as a result were able to get all the way to the AFC championship game and give Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts a run for their money.

Even though the Jets were able to contain Manning and company for the majority of the contest, they eventually fell to the Colts and their surprisingly successful season came to an end.

Despite being unable to reach the Super Bowl after an impressive run in the playoffs, the New York Jets have become legitimate title contenders heading into next season and could very well be playing in Dallas in February.

The one problem the Jets are facing during the preseason is dealing with the contract holdout out of arguably their best player in cornerback Darrelle Revis.

Heading into the 2010-2011 NFL regular season, Revis was set to make $1 million dollars, but after his breakout season last year and the fact that he is now considered arguably the best defensive player in the game, the All-Pro wants to be paid like the best in the game at his position.

Unfortunately, the Jets and the Revis haven’t been able to come to an agreement on a new contract as the two-time Pro Bowler wants to be paid somewhere in the range of $14-16 million dollars a year.

Even though the Jets really don’t want to pay their superstar cornerback that kind of money, they do seem willing to pay him $120 over the next ten years, but at this point in time that still seems to be not enough as Revis continues to holdout as the New York Jets head towards their first preseason game against the New York Giants.

Obviously, the Jets would like nothing more than to agree to terms that helps both the team and Revis moving forward, but head coach Rex Ryan has that even though he would love to get his superstar cornerback as soon as possible, he is ready to move on without him in order to get this team ready for the season and a possible run at a Super Bowl.

There is no doubt that the New York Jets are a better team with Darrelle Revis staring down opposing quarterbacks, but even though it seems very possible that the Jets could be without their lockdown corner for the entire season, they still have a great shot at contending for a Super Bowl title this season.
