The consensus around the NFL heading into the Thanksgiving Day showdown with the division rival Detroit Lions was that the Green Bay Packers could face their toughest challenge of the season and suffer the first loss of the year. Even though the Lions have a streaky football team over the last few weeks, Detroit still had the talent and potential to pull off the upset over the undefeated Packers.

Unfortunately, despite giving the Packers a run for their money in the first half, the second half was a disaster for the Lions as they completely fell apart on both sides of the football. In the first half, Detroit was able to contain the potent offense of Green Bay and hold arguably the best team in the league to just one touchdown which came at the 4:51 mark in the second quarter with a touchdown pass from Aaron Rodgers to Greg Jennings. The Lions couldn’t capitalize on the solid play from the defense though as they failed to score as well and headed into halftime down 7-0.
Once the third quarter got underway, the Green Bay Packers started to fire on all cylinders by outscoring the Detroit Lions 17-0. The Packers were able to first get on the board in the second half with a one-yard run from John Kuhn which was followed by an impressive 65-yard passing touchdown from Aaron Rodgers to wideout James Jones. This touchdown was what really sparked the offense and the Packers moving forward. With just 1:51 left in the third, the Packers were able to get a 35-yard field goal from Mason Crosby which increased the lead to 24-0 heading into the fourth and final quarter.
With the Detroit Lions looking at a huge deficit and losing arguably their best defensive player in Ndamukong Suh (ejected), the hopes of ending the Green Bay Packers perfect season were slim to none as the offense just couldn’t get going and the defense found it difficult to put pressure on NFL MVP frontrunner Aaron Rodgers without Suh.
Despite the Lions looking like they were on the verge of getting shutout on Thanksgiving Day, Detroit was finally able to get in the endzone with a 16-yard run from Keiland Williams and a two-point conversion scored by a pass from Matthew Stafford to Titus Young. Even though the Lions made it a two possession game, Detroit was just too far behind and couldn’t contain Aaron Rodgers and company.

With a second field goal on the day by kicker Mason Crosby from 32 yards out and a late touchdown pass from up-and-coming quarterback Matthew Stafford to perennial Pro Bowl wide receiver Calvin Johnson, the game was virtually over with the Detroit Lions only managing to put up 15 points on the board while the Green Bay Packers easily scored 27 and got their 11th win of the season.
