Will the Next Super Bowl be a Colts and Saints Affair?

There is nothing like seeing football at its best for an avid football fan!  Most people believe that the only time you see football at its best is in college football where the players don’t play for money and play just for the pure love and passion for the game.  Personally, I love the NFL and the great teams and players the league produces!  At times the athletes definitely take advantage of all the money and the fame by doing stupid things off the field and not giving it their all on the field, but occasionally you get teams playing at such a high level that it is like watching poetry in motion!

This season in the NFL there are a lot of good and entertaining football teams like the Cincinnati Bengals, Dallas Cowboys and the San Diego Chargers, but this year we have seen three exceptional football teams in Brett Favre’s Minnesota Vikings, Drew Brees’ New Orleans Saints and Peyton Manning’s Indianapolis Colts.  At this point in time, both the New Orleans Saints and the Indianapolis are undefeated.  Even though it isn’t a big surprise that these two teams have been able to remain undefeated so long, it is the first time in NFL history that two teams have been undefeated up until this point in the NFL season.

The Saints and the Colts may be undefeated, but Brett Favre has seemed to do the impossible this season by leading the Vikings to a 10-1 record and become a candidate for this season’s NFL MVP at 40 years of age.  What Brett Favre is doing with the Minnesota Vikings is incredible, but as the season progresses there might be something even more spectacular on the horizon in the NFL as we just might see another first in the league as the Indianapolis Colts and the New Orleans Saints seem headed for what could be an unprecedented all undefeated Super Bowl. Obviously at just week 14 it is still a bit early to be talking about an all undefeated Super Bowl, but the possibility of it happening at this point seems plausible and very likely.

The New Orleans Saints have basically already faced the toughest part of their schedule and still remained undefeated up until this point, but they will have one tougher opponent to face in the regular season before going the distance in the unbeaten before heading into the playoffs.  The one and only game that I believe will be a challenge for the Saints down the stretch will be against the Dallas Cowboys in week 15.  Tony Romo and company are leading the way in the NFC East right now and will be by no means an easy win for the high powered offense of the Saints.

As for the Indianapolis Colts they face perhaps their toughest challenge in the next two to three weeks of the season.  The Colts will most likely be able to remain undefeated after the next two weeks, but they might have their work cut out for them once again against the Jacksonville Jaguars if Maurice Jones-Drew and company can keep playing at a high level.  Regardless of the obstacles in their way, I believe the Colts and the Saints will be able to at least make it into the playoffs undefeated, but making it to the Super Bowl is another story.

Where is Vince Young?

Quarterback Vince Young turned a lot of heads during his three years in college at the University of Texas. Young excited football fans with his incredible rushing abilities, running for 1000 yards in every season in college, an outstanding achievement considering that he is a quarterback and plays only 12 games per year. Young reached the pinnacle of his college career on January 4, 2006, when his Texas Longhorns faced the USC Trojans in the 2006 Rose Bowl.  With his team trailing 38-33 late in the fourth quarter and facing a 4th down, Young covered the eight yards that separated him from the endzone and scored his third rushing touchdown of the game, giving the Longhorns a famous victory.  This play capped an impressive college career for Young, and he would be ranked by ESPN as the 10th greatest college football player ever.

After his hometown Houston Texans passed on him and selected DE Mario Williams first overall in the 2006 draft, Young was picked up by the Tennessee Titans, owners of the third overall pick.  Young had an instant impact on the team and was named the 2006 Offensive Rookie of the Year while also earning a selection to the Pro Bowl. The following year, Young led his team to a 10-6 record and to their first playoff appearance in four years.

Everything seemed to be going well for Young, but all of a sudden, he disappeared.  Literally.  He had disappeared after an off-field incident, and now he seems to be invisible on the field also.

It all started in the very first game of the 2008 season.  In an Opening Week game against division rival Jacksonville, Young was playing poorly, and after he threw his second interception of the game, he was booed mercilessly by the hometown fans.  To make matters worse, Young also injured his knee in the game and would be forced to miss some playing time.  The following day, he disappeared.  Young left his home without telling anyone where he would go and he did not take his cell phone with him.  However, Young’s therapist mentioned to the Titans that his client had talked about suicide several times, and it was later known that Young left his home with a gun in his possession.  That information prompted the Titans to call police to search for Young.  Young was finally found after a long search, but he was still going through some sort of depression and was upset at the booing that had been directed his way.  Young would ultimately lose his starting quarterback job to Kerry Collins, and Collins led the Titans to a 13-3 finish and the best record in the NFL during the 2008 Regular Season.

Heading into this year, Young was still No. 2 on the team’s depth chart at quarterback behind the veteran Collins. Young was told that he’d be given a shot at getting his starting job back, but his play would have to be convincing enough for that to happen.  Young featured in all five of Tennessee’s preseason games, but his lack of consistency was his biggest problem.  He would look great in one game, but then he would be horrible the following week.  For example, in his second preseason game, Young ripped it up against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, finishing with a quarterback rating of 118.5.  The following week in Dallas, he completed just 3 passes on 9 attempts and finished the game with an embarrassing QB rating of 5.6.  Obviously, the Titans could not take a chance on Young as their starter heading into the season, and so Collins was again pronounced the starter at the end of training camp.

“Where is Vince Young?” was the question on everyone’s mind the night of September 9, 2008 when the disgruntled quarterback surprisingly disappeared, and that question is relevant once again, but it now concerns Vince Young the football player and not Vince Young the person.  Right now it’s hard to believe that this is the same guy who won Rookie of the Year honors less than three years ago and who was named one of the top ten college football players of all time.  He’s been throwing more and more interceptions and less touchdowns.  Even his rushing stats have taken a hit in the NFL.  And after an on-and-off preseason, it’s highly unlikely that Young will oust Collins from the starting lineup anytime soon.

So where exactly is Vince Young?  He’s on the Titans’ bench, watching Kerry Collins running the offense behind center.  And unless Kerry Collins is injured or the 36-year old decides to retire in the near future, things should stay the way they are in Tennessee.
