The Best Back-Up QuarterBacks in the NFL

1. Philadelphia Eagles – Kevin Kolb
Kolb is good enough to start for any NFL team. Unfortunately for him Michael Vick is experiencing career resurgence.

2. Minnesota Vikings – Tarvaris Jackson
With Brett Favre’s future in doubt, the Vikings will be Jackson’s team sooner than expected.

3. Detroit Lions – Shaun Hill
Hill was surprisingly solid starting in place of Matthew Stafford. I have a feeling that if Hill was still with San Francisco, the Niners wouldn’t struggle this much.

4. New York Giants – Sage Rosenfels
Rosenfels is pretty good down the stretch as he proved during his time in Texas.

5. Cleveland Browns – Seneca Wallace
Wallace’s QB rating has reached 100 percent and above two times this season – both resulting in losses. Weird stat, but Wallace should still start over Jake Delhomme.

6. Tennessee Titans – Kerry Collins
Collins has led the Titans to back-to-back wins. He is capable of leading the Titans to the playoffs.

7. Miami Dolphins – Chad Pennington
Good enough to be a starter, but his inconsistency has cost him his starting job.

8. Green Bay Packers – Matt Flynn
Flynn’s stock rose after he won a highly competitive training camp QB match against Brian Brohm for back-up duty.

9. Chicago Bears – Caleb Hanie
Hanie should’ve started instead of Todd Collins. Jay Cutler is dispensable with Hanie waiting in the wings.

10. Oakland Raiders – Bruce Gradkowski
Gradkowski was given the chance to become Oakland’s starter after Jason Campbell’s lackluster start. He didn’t fare any better.

11. Pittsburgh Steelers – Byron Leftwich
Leftwich is officially the back-up, but Charlie Batch is more reliable.

12. Denver Broncos – Brady Quinn
Quinn has more experience than Tim Tebow. That’s the only reason why he’s the second stringer

13. Carolina Panthers – Jimmy Clausen
Clausen has great mechanics and a great arm. He has much to learn before becoming a starter full-time

14. Washington Redskins – Rex Grossman
With Donovan McNabb not playing his best football, he and Grossman are a wash.

15. St. Louis Rams – A.J. Feeley
Feeley gave rookie Sam Bradford a run for his money in training camp.

16. New York Jets – Mark Brunell
A veteran only playing because he can’t pay off debts. Other than that, he’s a veteran that can fill in on short notice.

17. Dallas Cowboys – Jon Kitna
Kitna played rusty when Tony Romo was knocked out. Dallas fans better get ready for more losses with Kitna at the helm.

18. New England Patriots – Brian Hoyer
Hoyer showed some potential during the preseason. He completed 32 of 57 passes for 471 yards.

19. Buffalo Bills – Brian Brohm
Hard to judge from Brohm early career stats of zero touchdowns and two interceptions.

20. San Diego Chargers – Billy Volek
Volek is probably good enough to start for the Browns.

21. San Francisco 49ers – David Carr
Niner fans got what they wanted when Carr took over for Alex Smith. Unfortunately Carr was not ready to give back to the fans.

22. Jacksonville Jaguars – Trent Edwards
Banished from Buffalo, Edwards still can’t find success in Jacksonville.

23. Houston Texans – Dan Orlovsky
He is the sole man behind Matt Schaub. Shows how much trust the organization has in Orlovsky.

24. Arizona Cardinals – Max Hall
Hall had a rough second start as he was battered around and knocked out momentarily.

25. Atlanta Falcons – Chris Redman
Redman is a reliable back-up that has thrown for 21 touchdowns and 13 interceptions in his career.

26. Baltimore Ravens – Marc Bulger
How many teams have the luxury of having a former Pro Bowl MVP as their back-up?

27. Seattle Seahawks – Charlie Whitehurst
Whitehurst has more rush attempts (two) than pass attempts (0).

28. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Josh Johnson
Johnson has completed 83 percent of his passes.

29. Kansas City Chiefs – Brodie Croyle
Croyle filled in nice quietly when Matt Cassel was injured in Week 1 during the 2009 season.

30. Cincinnati Bengals – Jordan Palmer
Has not thrown a touchdown pass in his entire back-up career.

31. Indianapolis Colts – Curtis Painter
Peyton Manning better be made of steel or else the Colts will be in less than capable hands.

32. New Orleans Saints – Chase Daniel
Has not thrown a pass in the NFL.

Week 4 Last Handoff – Part 3

Arizona at San Diego

Antonio Gates has grown to be Philip Rivers’ favorite target since Vincent Jackson began his holdout. Gates grabbed two touchdowns and became only the seventh tight end in NFL history with 500 catches. He finished with seven catches for 144 yards.

Arizona didn’t even stand a chance. Their lone touchdown was on a recovered fumble by Kerry Rhodes. You gotta feel sorry for Larry Fitzgerald because there’s nobody to throw him a decent pass to him. Derek Anderson was replaced by Max Hall after Anderson threw two interceptions. Hall, like Anderson, took numerous hits and was sacked three times.

Rising: Antonio Gates. He had his second straight game with at least a hundred yards receiving. Not bad for an undrafted player.

Falling: Derek Anderson. There’s no denying that he was the problem in Cleveland.

Washington at Philadelphia

The Redskins pulled out an ugly win in Philadelphia. Donovan McNabb didn’t play great but was happy with the result. Ryan Torain provided the Redskins with a solid performance by rushing for a touchdown.

The Eagles lost the game and lost Michael Vick. He was hit in the first quarter and left with chest and rib injuries. Kevin Kolb stepped in and couldn’t find consistent rhythm. He had several chances to lead the Eagles to a last minute victory but missed some wide open receivers. The Eagles are going to be in trouble if Vick does not recover quickly.

Rising: Ryan Torain. Torain is getting more opportunities to show what damage he’s capable of doing.

Falling: Kevin Kolb. He showed that he was incapable of winning in the clutch.

Chicago at NY Giants

The Bears dropped their first game of the season because the Giants finally decided to start playing. New York’s defense roughed up Jay Cutler, knocking him down numerous times and knocking him out. Todd Collins, the guy who replaced Cutler, was also knocked out in the fourth. Cutler didn’t see most of the hits put on him. It was just plain tenacity on the part of the Giants. Cutler was so rattled he threw for only 42 yards and was sacked nine times in the first half alone.

Ahmad Bradshaw came up big with 129 rushing yards and a touchdown.

Rising: Ahmad Bradshaw. He is the only consistent presence for the Giants.

Falling: Bears O-line. Cutler has absorbed a total of 17 sacks already.

New England at Miami

Randy Moss didn’t even have to catch a single pass because New England’s special teams provided plenty of offense and defense. They scored on a kickoff and blocked a field goal. Tom Brady was his usual efficient self with 153 yards and a touchdown.

Chad Henne threw 39 times which was the Dolphins downfall. Miami is effective when they play conservative offense. They tried to do too many things on offense. Miami outgained New England 400 to 265 but failed to score when it mattered most.

Rising: New England’s special teams. They simply overwhelmed the Dolphins.

Falling: Miami Dolphins. They’ve lost two in a row after showing a stingy defense in the opening two weeks.

NFL Season Preview: AFC North

Baltimore Ravens (9-7)

Last season the Baltimore Ravens proved to everyone that they could play just as good on offense as they can on defense as running back Ray Rice emerged as one of the best backs in the league and quarterback Joe Flacco became a force to be reckoned with under center.

This season the Ravens will come into the 2010 NFL regular season with a lot of confidence as they will have their sights set on winning the AFC title and lifting the Vince Lombardi trophy for the first time since 2000.

Even though the veterans on defense like perennial Pro Bowlers Ray Lewis (linebacker) and Ed Reed (safety) are one year older, they are still amongst the best in the league at their position and should continue to drive offenses crazy this season.

Along with the offense improving as much as it did last season, the Ravens were able to finally get their hands on a Pro Bowl caliber wideout in Anquan Boldin from the Arizona Cardinals.

With Boldin downfield, Flacco under center and Ray Rice coming out of the backfield, the Baltimore Ravens could be a very dangerous team this season.

Cincinnati Bengals (10-6)

This year the Cincinnati Bengals will come into the NFL regular season as the defending AFC North division champions and even though there are still doubts about how good this team really is, they may have become even better during the offseason by adding perennial Pro Bowl wide receiver Terrell Owens to Carson Palmer’s passing game.

With T.O. and Chad Ochocinco downfield and running back Cedric Benson coming out of the backfield, the Bengals could be an offensive powerhouse this season, but whether or not their defense can have a repeat performance like last season remains to be seen.

Pittsburgh Steelers (9-7)

The Pittsburgh Steelers may have been the team to beat heading into
last season, but after completely missing the playoffs and losing to teams like the Cleveland Browns, Kansas City Chiefs and the Oakland Raiders, Ben Roethlisberger and company have become a team that needs to earn back the distinction as one of the league’s elite.

Fortunately, the Steelers will have everyone back healthy heading into the 2010 NFL regular season, but they will be without Big Ben for the first four games of the season because of a suspension handed down from NFL commissioner Roger Goodell for violating the league’s personal conduct policy.

Even though they will be without their two-time Super Bowl champion quarterback for the first four games, the Steelers do have some capable backups in veteran Charlie Batch and the lightening quick Dennis Dixon.

Although Pittsburgh does have shot at competing once again in the AFC, I believe they will be in for another rough season and possibly some drastic changes as a result.

Cleveland Browns (5-11)

Over the past three years or so, the Cleveland Browns have been nothing more than a joke in the NFL as they have been awful on both sides of the football, but even though they did makes some upgrades by adding veteran quarterback Jake Delhomme and rookie Colt McCoy (Texas) into the mix, Cleveland will almost certainly be headed for another disappointing season.

Division Title Prediction: Baltimore Ravens

NFL Season Preview: AFC South

Indianapolis Colts (14-2)

Four-time NFL MVP quarterback Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts are still feeling the sting of losing in the Super Bowl last year to the New Orleans Saints, but heading into the 2010 NFL regular season, the Colts will be looking to prove that the Saints just got lucky and they are still the team to beat in this league.

Even though the Colts still have a nonexistent running game, the Indianapolis offense is amongst the best in the league with Peyton Manning under center and this season the future Hall of Fame quarterback could put up some record numbers as his younger receivers like Pierre Garcon and Austin Collie start to come around.

Bet the NFL Season With Bodog Sportsbook

Despite having to compete against teams like the New York Jets and the Baltimore Ravens in order to make it back to the Super Bowl, I believe the Indianapolis Colts have what it takes and unless anyone figures out how to stop Peyton Manning any time soon, the Colts should be the team to come out on top this season.

Houston Texans (9-7)

Over the past couple of years, the Houston Texans have gotten progressively better as their offense continues to improve with every passing season.

Last year was a perfect example of how the Texans have improved their game on the offensive side of the football as perennial Pro Bowlers Matt Schaub (quarterback) and Andre Johnson (wide receiver) have become arguably the best one-two combination in the NFL.

Even though they have improved and could very well be playoff bound for the first time in franchise history this season, the Houston Texans still share their division with the Indianapolis Colts and will have to clinch the AFC Wildcard in order to finally make it to the postseason.

Tennessee Titans (8-8)

The Tennessee Titans headed into last season with high hopes of contending for a Super Bowl title as their defense was amongst the best in the league and their offense was starting to come around.

Unfortunately, those hopes of contending for a Vince Lombardi trophy
died pretty quickly as the Titans started the season 0-6.

Even though veteran quarterback Kerry Collins resurrected his career with the Titans just a year earlier, his play was really starting to hurt the team and as a result head coach Jeff Fisher chose to bench the veteran and start Vince Young.

Bet NFL Football at Bodog – Click HERE

Ultimately, the move was the right one as the Titans won eight of their
last ten games, but what was most impressive with their running game as running back Chris Johnson become arguably the best back in the league after rushing for a league-high 2,006 yards.

This season the Titans will look to have another big year, but with opposing defenses concentrating on stopping the run this time around, it could be either be a rough year for Vince Young or the best of his career.

Jacksonville Jaguars (7-9)

The Jacksonville Jaguars have been nothing more than a mediocre football team over the last few years and this season will not be any different as they look to running back Maurice Jones-Drew to do practically everything on the offensive side of the football.

Division Title Prediction: Indianapolis Colts
