Top 5 Fantasy Football Quarterbacks

#1 Michael Vick, Philadelphia Eagles

Last season the Philadelphia Eagles burst onto the scene in the NFL with one of the most dynamic offenses in the league due to the emergence of superstar quarterback and MVP candidate Michael Vick. Even though a lot people doubted Vick’s ability to get back to form as one of the best gunslingers in the NFL, the veteran quarterback took everyone by surprise and became just as good with his arm as he has been with his feet.

Coming into this NFL regular season, Michael Vick will have even more offensive weapons at his disposal in recently acquired free agents Ronnie Brown and Steve Smith to play alongside LeSean McCoy, Jeremy Maclin and DeSean Jackson. Another impressive season with big fantasy numbers is almost certainly on the way for the Philadelphia Eagles starting quarterback.

#2 Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay Packers

The Green Bay Packers will head into this NFL regular season as the reigning Super Bowl champions and will have high hopes of being the first team repeat since the New England Patriots. The one reason that the Packers have a good chance of repeating is due to having one of the best quarterbacks in the league under center in Aaron Rodgers.

Not only is Aaron Rodgers an elite quarterback in the NFL, but he is also an elite fantasy football QB that can get you a lot of points through the air and the ground. Obviously, he won’t rack up the rushing yards and touchdowns like Michael Vick, but he can and will get it done through the air.

#3 Tom Brady, New England Patriots

As the reigning NFL MVP, Tom Brady has shown no signings of slowing down as the superstar quarterback of the New England Patriots and this season the league’s Golden Boy and company will be aiming for another shot at winning a Super Bowl title in the Bill Belichick era.

Even without future Hall of Fame wide receiver Randy Moss his disposal Tom Brady was an elite fantasy football quarterback last year and this year things will get even better for the three-time Super Bowl champion as he will now have Pro Bowler Chad Ochocinco as his downfield threat along with Wes Welker and Deion Branch.

#4 Philip Rivers, San Diego Chargers

Even though the San Diego Chargers were unable to win the AFC West division title and make it back into the playoffs last season, quarterback Philip Rivers had a breakout year and became a legitimate MVP candidate.

With that being said, the Chargers could bounce back this season this another solid year from Rivers as he will have wide receiver Vincent Jackson and tight end Antonio Gates back healthy.

#5 Drew Brees, New Orleans Saints

The New Orleans Saints may have been embarrassed in last season’s playoffs by getting knocked out by the lowly Seattle Seahawks, but they are still considered to be one of the league’s elite teams and should bounce back with a vengeance this season with superstar quarterback Drew Brees leading the way.

NFL Preseason Week 4: Philadelphia Eagles @ NY Jets

Philadelphia Eagles @ New York Jets Thurs. Sept. 1, 2011 7:30 p.m. EST

Once the NFL regular season gets underway on Sept. 8, two teams that will have a lot of pressure on them to be successful every single week and ultimately contend for a Super Bowl title at season’s end will be Rex Ryan’s New York Jets and Andy Reid’s Philadelphia Eagles. These two teams have made moves in the offseason to improve their squads on both sides of the football and as a result have gotten people buzzing about just how good they could be during the regular season.

In their preseason finale, Michael Vick and the Philadelphia Eagles will travel to New Meadowlands Stadium to face their toughest test of the preseason against the New York Jets. Much like the showdown against the Pittsburgh Steelers earlier in the preseason, the Philadelphia Eagles will face another dominant secondary with Pro Bowlers Darrelle Revis and Antonio Cromartie looking to get the best of quarterback Michael Vick.

Coming into this game, both Rex Ryan and Andy Reid will be looking to play their starters for maybe a series or two in order to keep them fresh for Week 1 of the NFL regular season. With that being said, this could be a game with the second teams going head-to-head and certain players looking to play their way onto the squads.

One headline that will most likely be dominating all others during this preseason finale will the new lucrative contract extension that Pro Bowl quarterback Michael Vick signed earlier in the week. As a way to secure the team’s future under center, the Philadelphia Eagles made it a priority to re-sign Michael Vick to contract extension that would keep him in Philly for at least the next five to six years.

Reportedly, the new contract is worth about $100 million dollars over the next six years. Not only is this the second $100 million dollar deal that Michael Vick has signed during his time in the NFL (first with the Atlanta Falcons), but this time around he will get $40 million dollars of this contract guaranteed opposed to the $35 million he had guaranteed with the Falcons.

With Michael Vick a very happy and very rich man, the Philadelphia Eagles seem to have a bright future ahead of them along with recent Pro Bowl free agents they signed like Vince Young, Ronnie Brown, Steve Smith and Nnamdi Asomugha.

This game against the New York Jets will be nothing more than a formality and a matchup that won’t be taken very seriously by either team, but this could be a potential Super Bowl preview with these two teams having what it takes to go the distance this season.

In my opinion, the New York Jets are the better all-around team as of right now with the experience and the leadership on the sidelines to make it to the Super Bowl, but the Philadelphia Eagles will be a team to watch all season long that could turn out to be a very good football team in the NFC Conference.

NFL Playoffs: Packers @ Falcons

NFC Conference Divisional Round: Green Bay Packers @ Atlanta Falcons Sat. Jan. 15th 2011 8pm EST

It wasn’t all that long ago that the Atlanta Falcons were arguably the worst team in the NFL. No matter what this team did after fallout of their superstar quarterback Michael Vick going to prison for his role in a dog fighting ring, they just couldn’t get it right until they drafted a promising young quarterback in Matt Ryan out of Boston College.

The move to draft Ryan was a smart one as the quarterback position was a revolving door after Vick, but with his Boston College kid being a relatively unknown player, not many people knew what to expect. Fortunately, the Falcons lucked out as Ryan quickly turned out to be one of the best young quarterbacks in this league and led Atlanta back into the playoffs.

Not only did Matt Ryan make most Atlanta Falcons fans completely forget about Michael Vick, but he turned this team into a proven winner and seemed to get better with every passing game under center.

Along with making a name for himself as one of the league’s best quarterbacks, Matt Ryan was also blessed with having one of the best wide receivers at his disposal in Roddy White. With White downfield, the Falcons had a potent passing game, but it wasn’t until Atlanta signed running back Michael Turner that this team turned into a legitimate Super Bowl title contender and arguably the team of the future in the NFC Conference.

Last season the Atlanta Falcons had a good year, but it wasn’t enough to clinch a playoff spot, but heading into this season this team had high expectations and lived up to every single one of them as they were arguably the best team in the NFC Conference all year long.

With one of the best regular seasons in franchise history (13-3) and an NFC South division title to go along with it, the Atlanta Falcons locked up the number one seed in the NFC Conference and a first-round bye. Despite getting some much needed rest with a bye in the first-round of the playoffs, the Falcons will have a tough task ahead of them as they will be defending their home field at the Georgia Dome against the Green Bay Packers.

Even though they were underdogs against the Philadelphia Eagles (-3) in the first round and are underdogs once again heading into this matchup against the Atlanta Falcons (-2), the Green Bay Packers are a very good football team and will not be going down without a fight.

Atlanta Falcons Roddy White

The Packers may be ravaged with injuries as they have virtually no running game without running back Ryan Grant and took a huge hit in the passing game once tight end Jermichael Finley went down, I believe they will give the Falcons a run for their money this weekend.

The one thing the Falcons will have going for them in the Divisional round is that they will be playing at home and have a dynamic offense with a good mix of run and pass. The Packers defense will be put to the test all day long as Matt Ryan, Roddy White and Michael Turner will be a handful for Clay Matthews and Charles Woodson.

This should be a hard fought battle from start to finish, but ultimately I see the Atlanta Falcons advancing to the NFC Conference championship to face either the Seattle Seahawks or the Chicago Bears.

NFL Playoffs: Packers @ Eagles

There are quite a few interesting matchups in the first week of the NFL playoffs with Peyton Manning taking on the Jets defense and the Ravens defense battling the Chiefs running game, but perhaps the most intriguing is the Green Bay Packers heading to Philadelphia to take on NFL MVP candidate Michael Vick and the NFC East division champion Eagles.

These two NFC Conference heavyweights went head to head in Week 1 of the NFL regular season and even though Aaron Rodgers and Kevin Kolb dominated the headlines coming into that matchup, Michael Vick was the talk of the NFL after it.

With Kolb going down with a concussion early in the game, head coach Andy Reid and the Eagles were forced to throw Michael Vick under center. Even though Reid had all the confidence in the world in his backup quarterback, many people were still not sold on Vick being able to play at a high level in his comeback.

Fortunately for the Eagles, Vick was near unstoppable against the lockdown defense of the Packers as he rushed for a game-high 103 yards and threw for 175 yards and a touchdown. The former Atlanta Falcons superstar was unable to lead the team to victory over the Green Bay Packers, but he definitely opened a lot of eyes as it was the beginning of a brand new and improved Michael Vick.

Needless to say, Vick went on to torch NFL defenses throughout the rest of the NFL regular season and quickly started to get a lot of NFL MVP buzz, but the Packers couldn’t say the same as they just saw key players on offense go down with every passing week.

First it was Pro Bowl caliber running back Ryan Grant with a season-ending knee injury then another Pro Bowl caliber player in tight end Jermichael Finley with the same injury. With Grant the running game has been nonexistent and without Finley, Rodgers lost his favorite target in the redzone.

Despite all their injuries and problems playing consistently well throughout the entire year, the Green Bay Packers were able to lock up a playoff spot in the final week of the season and a rematch with Michael Vick and company.

Even though the Packers can play with anyone in the league when firing on all cylinders, Aaron Rodgers and company will be -3 point underdogs heading into this matchup and going up against an Eagles team that seems like they could be Super Bowl bound.

This game will come down to quarterback play in my opinion as it could very well be a battle between potent offenses and who has the football last. The Packers have the better defense in my opinion, but the Eagles have the better quarterback right now which makes this game very interesting to say the least.

In the end though, I believe the Philadelphia Eagles will come out on top as they are the better football team and poised to make a run deep in the playoffs.
