The San Diego Chargers are arguably one of the best teams in the NFL as they have absolutely dominated the AFC West division over the last six years and continue to put a competitive football team on the gridiron every single year.
This season the Chargers will enter the NFL regular season without future Hall of Fame running back LaDainian Tomlinson after releasing the former NFL MVP during the offseason. Even though LT might still have a few good years left in him after signing with the New York Jets, the Chargers had Darren Sproles and now rookie running back Ryan Matthews (Fresno State) to look to for their production out of the backfield.

There is no question that rookie running back Ryan Matthews will have some enormous shoes to fill this season after replacing his idol in San Diego, but the Chargers and head coach Norv Turner have high hopes for their new go to guy in the backfield as they believe he is the real deal.
Along with getting some youth in the backfield, the Chargers will also have their other offensives weapons back and ready to contend for a Super Bowl title as perennial Pro Bowlers in quarterback Philip Rivers and tight end Antonio Gates are poised for big numbers once again.
Unfortunately, even though the Chargers are still considered title contenders heading into the 2010 NFL regular season, they will be without their best wide receiver in Vincent Jackson.
Although this doesn’t not come as a surprise to Norv Turner and company as Jackson was set to serve a suspension for his second DUI arrest, the Pro Bowl wideout hasn’t gotten a commitment from the San Diego Chargers and is more than willing to sit out the entire season until the two sides can come to an agreement on a new contract.
This will almost certainly be a big blow to the Chargers offense, but they do have a backup plan in place as wide receiver Malcolm Floyd looks to pick up the slack in place of his teammate.
Along with Vincent Jackson, the future of linebacker Shawne Merriman was also in question during the offseason as he was looking for a commitment from the team as well, but in order to avoid a holdout or a possible trade, the Chargers agreed a new deal with arguably their best defensive player and will have him suited up to start the regular season.

Even though the San Diego Chargers will face stiff competition in the AFC Conference once again this season with the likes of the Indianapolis Colts, New York Jets, New England Patriots and Baltimore Ravens all gunning for the Super Bowl, Philip Rivers and company have a great chance of finally making it all the way to the big game in February as long as they can keep their team healthy.
The Chargers may still be waiting on Vincent Jackson, but even without him they are a very good football team and will be playoff bound with another AFC West division title to their credit at season’s end.
