NFL Week 11: Dallas Cowboys @ Washington Redskins

Dallas Cowboys @ Washington Redskins Sun. Nov. 20, 2011 1 p.m. EST

Over the past decade or so, the NFC East division has been an extremely competitive division in the NFL with all four teams having a legitimate shot of winning the division title or at least contending for the NFC Wild Card. This season things have changed a bit with the Washington Redskins (3-6) and the Philadelphia Eagles (3-6) pretty much out of playoff contention heading into Week 11, but the Dallas Cowboys (5-4) and the New York Giants (6-3) still have a shot to be playoff bound and will be battling it out for the division title.

With that being said, every single divisional game from here on out is extremely crucial for both the Giants and the Cowboys, but Dallas is still a game behind New York and will come into Week 11’s NFC East showdown with Washington in a must-win situation.

Now that the Dallas Cowboys have a legitimate threat coming out of the backfield in the form of running back DeMarco Murray, Jason Garrett’s offense has opened up completely with superstar quarterback Tony Romo finally having the versatile offense that he needs to turn this team into a Super Bowl title contender.

The one problem the Cowboys have had over the years besides a non-existent running game is the inability to play consistently well week in and week out. That problem might be in the distant future coming into this week if the Cowboys can win once again. With three wins in the last four games, America’s Team has shown promise, but everyone is waiting for this team to drop the ball like they have in years past.

The Washington Redskins on the other hand are looking to regain the form they had in the beginning of the NFL regular season when they won three of the first four games and were in first place in the NFC East. Ever since the benching of starting quarterback Rex Grossman, the Redskins have drastically gone downhill with five straight losses against the Philadelphia Eagles (20-13), Carolina Panthers (33-20), Buffalo Bills (23-0), San Francisco 49ers (19-11) and the Miami Dolphins (20-9).

Now that head coach Mike Shanahan has decided to go back to Rex Grossman under center, the Redskins’ fortunes could change and this team might be able to make a drastic turnaround, but chances are this team will continue to struggle until they can bring in a franchise caliber quarterback next season or in the near future.

With that being said, the Dallas Cowboys definitely have an easy win on the horizon against their division rivals as I really can’t see the Washington Redskins putting up a fight or even contending with the potent offense of America’s Team.

As of right now, the Dallas Cowboys are favored to get the win in the nation’s capital with a -8 point spread. This spread is right on the money in my opinion as I see another blowout win in the making for Tony Romo and company.

Take the Cowboys at -8.

NFL Week 6: Philadelphia Eagles @ Washington Redskins

Heading into this NFL regular season the Philadelphia Eagles were dubbed the “Dream Team” of the NFL and football’s version of LeBron James’ Miami Heat squad. With all the added hype and multiple Pro Bowl additions to both sides of the football, the Eagles were considered to be a legitimate Super Bowl title contender and not many could argue the fact that they were the most talented team on paper to start the season.

Despite getting an impressive win over the St. Louis Rams in Week 1, the Philadelphia Eagles looked like they still had some work to do in order to create some chemistry with their new additions and get superstar quarterback Michael Vick the protection he needs in the pocket. In Week 2, the Eagles showed their chink in their armor after falling to the Atlanta Falcons.

With Michael Vick going down with a concussion in the third quarter and being unable to return to the game, the Eagles were unable to hold their lead against the Falcons and as a result lost their first game of the season, 35-31. Even though no one though the Eagles would lose this early in the season, the loss didn’t really raise a lot of eyebrows because Vick was on the sidelines, but then came Week 3’s loss to the division rival New York Giants (29-16) followed by a loss to the San Francisco 49ers (24-23) and Buffalo Bills (31-24).

It would be hard to argue that the Philadelphia Eagles haven’t had one of the toughest schedules in the NFL to start the season as the Giants, 49ers and the Bills have been much better than anticipated in the preseason. Despite losing all of these games, the Eagles still have no excuse with all the talent they have on both sides of the football and head coach Andy Reid on the sidelines who is considered to be one of the best in the game.

In Week 6, the Philadelphia Eagles have a chance to bounce back and gain some ground in the NFC East division as they will face off against the first place division rival Washington Redskins. The Redskins are another team in the NFL that has been much better than anticipated this season with Mike Shanahan and company getting off to an impressive 3-1 start with Rex Grossman as the starting quarterback.

Even though this game should be a competitive one with the Washington Redskins looking to prove that they are for real this season and the Philadelphia Eagles trying to take the heat off by getting a win in the NFC East division, this will be the week that Michael Vick and company get back to form as I really can’t see them losing a fifth straight game to a lesser opponent.

As of right now, the Philadelphia Eagles are favored to get the win in this NFC East division battle with a -2 point spread.

Take the Eagles at -2.

2011 – 2012 NFL Regular Season Preview: NFC East

Dallas Cowboys (6-10)

Every year the hype surrounding the Dallas Cowboys can be overwhelming for this storied NFL franchise. No matter how good or bad the talent on the team may be year in and year out, the Dallas Cowboys are expected to win every single season and contend for a Super Bowl title.

Over the past two seasons, the Dallas Cowboys have failed to live up to expectations despite the extremely talented offense and defense they currently have. Injuries have been a big problem for this team, especially last season, but some people believe it was the head coaching of Wade Phillips that was their downfall.

This season will be the first full season for new head coach Jason Garrett and the sky seems to be the limit as the consensus is right now that the Dallas Cowboys could be a serious force to be reckoned with in the NFC East division.

Philadelphia Eagles (10-6, Division title)

Much like the Miami Heat of the NBA, the Philadelphia Eagles have put some added pressure on themselves heading into the upcoming NFL season due to blockbuster trades and high-profile free agent signings.

With the addition of Nnamdi Asomugha, Vince Young, Ronnie Brown, Steve Smith and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, the Eagles have gone from a perennial playoff team in the NFC Conference to a potential perennial Super Bowl title contender.

As if the roster wasn’t extremely talented last season, they have to be arguably the most talented team in the NFL heading into next season and the favorites to come out on top in the NFC East and the NFC Conference.

It will be interesting to see if superstar quarterback Michael Vick can continue to play well under center this season in Philly. Even if he doesn’t, Vince Young is ready to step in and lead this team. The Eagles are going to be scary good this season and might make the competition in the NFC Conference look ridiculous.

Washington Redskins (6-10)

Before last season, the Washington Redskins had made some drastic improvements to their team by adding perennial Pro Bowl quarterback Donovan McNabb and two-time Super Bowl champion head coach Mike Shanahan. Even though it looked like owner Daniel Synder had finally made the right moves to turn this franchise around, the Redskins had another awful season filled with disappointment.

This season might be more of the same for the lowly Redskins as they have traded away Mike Shanahan and have some big question marks at the quarterback position with Rex Grossman most likely being their starter.

Another disappointing season is almost certainly on the horizon for the Washington Redskins.

New York Giants (6-10)

It wasn’t all that long ago that the New York Giants were arguably one of the best all-around teams in the NFC Conference. With a great defense and a maturing Eli Manning leading the way, the Giants looked like they might be perennial Super Bowl title contenders, but these days it seems as though the team is falling apart and possibly headed towards a rebuilding process.

Division Winner Prediction: Philadelphia Eagles

Six teams get eliminated from playoff contention after Week 14

There are only three weeks left in the NFL regular season and the playoff picture is starting to shape up, especially since six teams have been officially knocked out of playoff contention.

Here are the six teams that will not be making it to the postseason and reasons why they will not be competing to make it to the Super Bowl this year:

Coming into this NFL regular season, the Washington Redskins had made some pretty drastic changes in order to finally turn around their struggling storied franchise, but unfortunately that hasn’t been the case as they will once again miss the playoffs.

With the addition of six-time Pro Bowl quarterback Donovan McNabb from the division rival Philadelphia Eagles and two-time Super Bowl champion head coach Mike Shanahan, the expectations in the nation’s capital were a little higher than usual, but even though they seemed to be a better team earlier in the season, the same result came out in the end.

Dallas Cowboys (4-9)

The Dallas Cowboys are without a doubt the best team all around team on this list with the most talent on the offensive side of the football, but they just weren’t able to pull things together until head coach Wade Phillips got the boot and offensive coordinator Jason Garrett got a much needed promotion.

Ever since Garrett has taken over, America’s Team has played like the team everyone thought they would be, but it was just too little too late for this team and now they are just playing for pride.

Denver Broncos (3-10)

The Denver Broncos headed into this season bruised and banged up as their defense and running game had taken some serious blows with injuries. Even with their best linebacker Elvis Dumervil and 80% of their running backs on the injured list, the Broncos were facing an uphill battle against three other AFC West division teams that had made considerable upgrades in the offseason.

Despite having an offense that was putting up major numbers with quarterback Kyle Orton under center, the Denver Broncos just haven’t been able to play consistently well throughout the season and as a result have quickly turned into one of the worst teams in the league.

Detroit Lions (3-10)

There is no doubting that the Detroit Lions are one of the most talented young teams in the league with a promising future, but they still have a ways to go before they can contend with the best of the best in this league or even in the NFC North division.

With Matthew Stafford under center, running back Jahvid Best coming out of the backfield, superstar wide receiver Calvin “Megatron” Johnson downfield and rookie standout defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh leading the defense, this team has a bright future.

Buffalo Bills (3-10)

The Buffalo Bills haven’t been a good football team in the NFL for a long time and not many people expected much from this team once again this season, but their 3-10 record coming into Week 15 doesn’t do them justice as they should have a winning record and a chance to make the playoffs right now, much like the Dallas Cowboys.

Unfortunately, that isn’t the case as the Bills haven’t been able to closeout games this season, but they might have finally found their starting quarterback in Ryan Fitzpatrick which is only good news moving forward.

Carolina Panthers (1-12)

The Carolina Panthers were considered a legitimate threat to make the playoffs before this NFL regular season began, but since then they totally dropped the ball and quickly become the worst team in the league with some questions surrounding quarterback Jimmy Clausen.
