NFL Monday Night Football Preview & Free Pick- Week 4

Detroit Lions at Seattle Seahawks

Pointspread: Seattle -10

Total Line: 43

The Detroit Lions head on the road this week to CenturyLink Field to face the Seattle Seahawks under the prime time lights of Monday Night Football. BetOnline has opened the Seahawks as 10-point home favorites and its NFL betting odds for the total have been set at 43.

Saying that the Lions have had a slow start out of the gate would be a huge understatement following a 0-3 start (both straight-up and against the spread) in which they have been outscored 83-56. They have closed as underdogs in all three games and the total has stayed UNDER in their last two games.

Prospects for a turnaround this week do not look all that good behind an offense that cannot run the ball and a quarterback (Matthew Stafford) that still has a sore throwing arm from a hit he took in Week1. Detroit’s defense has not helped the cause and through the first three weeks of the season this unit is ranked 28th in the NFL in yards allowed (395.7) and 25th in points allowed (27.7).

Seattle bounced back from a stunning 0-2 start (SU and ATS) following losses to St. Louis and Green Bay on the road with a much needed 26-0 shutout over Chicago last week as a heavy 16.5-point home favorite. The total stayed well UNDER the 43.5-point closing line against the Bears and it has now stayed UNDER in its last two games.

The Seahawks’ defense got a huge boost from the return of defensive back Cam Chancellor last week after an extended holdout, but their offense could take a major hit on Monday night if running back Marshawn Lynch is unable to go. He tweaked his hamstring in last week’s game and is currently listed as questionable on the latest injury report. Seattle could have a hard time replacing his production with quarterback Russell Wilson and a passing game that is ranked 27th in the league in yards per game.

The Lions have failed to cover ATS in six of their last seven games and the total has stayed UNDER in 17 of their last 23 games. Couple those trends with the fact that Seattle is 8-1 SU in its last nine home games and it would be hard to see the Seahawks lose this game. As far as my “best bet” pick, I would still go with the UNDER 43 as the Lions could easily suffer the same fate as the Bears at CenturyLInk Field on Monday night.
